MISS? NAA

It’s now a ritual not to miss the show. And whenever I have found myself out of their ‘coverage area’, I’ve kicked myself hard. Fact is I’ve been tuning in mostly after the first hour (due to other competing demands). However, missing the first hour of a three hour show is no big deal.

My association with the show began four years ago when Y 107.9 FM commenced transmission. And since then, Ryse N Shyne has assumed a flagship position as far as radio programming on YFM and morning radio broadcasting in general here in Accra.

One of the propelling reasons for this feat lies in the choice of host. Ms. Naa (Naa Adzorkor) has gradually and efficiently exerted herself on the show, thanks in part to the experience garnered during her time with Groove FM back in the late 90s. She is, simply put, the show.

And her shoes have appeared so huge that those who sit in for her when she’s away seem not to have enough feet to fill her shoes.  I do suspect that the show’s ratings plummet whenever she has been away.

Her drive, charisma and energy rub on listeners especially during the start of the week when many still reek from the weekend blues.

EARLY DAYS
Ryse N Shyne has transitioned from its early days when Ms. Naa with support from producers Kumi and E-Boogie run the show. That was the days when she played her ‘own’ songs from some of her favourite artistes like Wale (before his MMG move), K’naan, Fela Kuti, Wanlov etc.

Those were the days she came across as a deviant, I-will-say-it-with-no-apologies type of host. Sometimes her attitude was radio unfriendly. She sounded cocky, harsh and brutish-from dissing TV shows, social service providers (and I quiet remember she took one of those courier companies to the cleaners), to munching food live on air.

Her vexation was to be understood since she was a JJC and so accustomed to things operating in a clock work style as was the case in US where she had been domiciled.

CHANGES
Rhyse N Shyne has undergone a series of changes. First is the de-coupling of roles, following the recruitment of DJ Vision. Ms. Naa has settled in as a presenter/producer of the show with the music or playlist handled by Vision. And what a union that has proven to be. Vision, who was snapped from Vibe FM, has established himself as a real force with his mixes.

Besides the music, her sense of humor and spontaneity, her ‘banter’ with Vision and Kumi over some issues adds spark to the show. The two pass as the best tag team in radio today.

Second is the introduction of Loud N Lyve session where Papa V gets the opportunity to do a non-stop 20-minutes power mix of various genres of music. His seamless and sublime mixes during this session can best be described as the 50 carat diamond on the ring.

Third is the level of interface with listeners. The advent of social media has made it easier for listeners to dabble in engaging conversation. The listener has a sense of share in the show and that’s very profound.

STILL ROCKING
Rhyse N Shyne has been able to hold its own and provided an escape for many who consider morning political radio discussions nauseating.  I pray she doesn’t leave the station because that will be the ‘death’ of the show.

As it stands, Rhyse N Shyne with Ms. Naa, Dj Vision with ample support from Kumi on Y 107.9 FM every weekday is something not worth missing though her face-to-face interviews with corporate organizations sometimes kill the vibe. But as the mantra goes: bills got to be paid.

Until then, lock in and listen to Ryse N Shyne with Ms. Naa weekdays on Y107.9 FM and jam away.
