It’s
often a risky turf for a young rap act to sample a song by a legend and make it
his own. Unless you are that talented, you are bound to fail in that quest.
That
must be the same thought, rapper Mr. Metaphor (Fricky) spared when he decided
to record and subsequently release his new single ‘Help Yourself’, off his up-coming project ‘Collector’s Item’. Help
Yourself is the third single to be released off this new tape.

The
single samples an Amy Winehouse oldie by (same title) and opens with Amy
singing in her unmistakable, all familiar contralto voice, before Mr. Metaphor
jumps in with his verse.
As
the title of classically made song suggest, the rapper talks about the need to
believe in oneself, as he clearly drums home the message in his lyrics
‘’ You
sleeping with the knife/ It’s killing your dreams/ If you are willing you’ll be
the best to ever live it/ Your destiny is written/You can die a legend but
that’s your decision’’
The
aura that the track carries is different from the many hip hop songs on the
Ghanaian music scene currently. The beats accompanying the song is laid back,
with a jazzy and soul touch, dotted with neatly arranged horns; perfectly notched
to give the song a good vibe. The classic tone enveloping Help yourself makes
it a tune one cannot ignore on a playlist.
Mr.
Metaphor’s new project ‘Collector’s Item’
is, according to him, to advertise his versatility to his fans and rap music
heads, who have often described him a s a ‘metaphor and punch line MC’ and also
chart a new form of music genre he classifies ‘New Black Soul’.
New Black Soul is a fusion of thought provoking lyricism with classic soul/jazz
samples. That is, artistes going back to thoughtful, creative forms of music
which carries an old school (nostalgic) feel.
